Shipwrights at Work

The champagne launch of the 'Phemie', 1935

The Phemie is built and launched at Poole

Poole's shipwrights have built boats along this shore for centuries, adapting their techniques and their materials as time passed. Today you can see the magnificent Sunseeker yachts being prepared for their lucky owners, but smaller craft have also been launched from Poole. This film shows a private yacht from the 1930s coming to completion.

The yacht is finally named and launched from Newman's shipyard will all due ceremony including the traditional breaking a bottle of champagne...which apparently goes over everybody's shoes!

Interested in boats? Come and see Poole Museum's logboat, carved from ancient forests in 295 BC and the only boat to have been preserved in sugar.
