The Antelope Inn building dates from the 1500s. A visitor in 1774 described a noisy stay here:
'Lots of stage coaches and chaises, great broad wheeled wagons, and strings of pack horses coming in and out. Horns blowing late into the night woke us up several times.'
The Antelope has always been a hub of activity through the centuries – its yards and rooms used by Royal Mail coaches, politicians and foreign tradesmen.
