Clues on the surface

The bird sculptures can be viewed from a distance as a group, but each figure deserves a closer look. The artist used the surface of the birds to engrave outlines and images relating to the industry it represents.

Glass inserts add colour and detail, with themed images continuing in the cast glass surfaces. The bird associated with boatbuilding, for example, features the museum's Iron Age logboat, trading vessels, canoes and wartime landing craft, as well as the boats built today by Sunseeker and the RNLI.
